How to Find a GOOD Social Media Attorney

Whether you’re a small business owner, influencer, or independent contractor who works in the social media industry, you should most definitely be working with a social media attorney ⚖️.

Even if you have yet to experience legal problems with your business, a social media lawyer is an indispensable part of your team. From intellectual property, copyrights, privacy, and data protection, to advertising, marketing, and contract negotiation, social media law firms can help with it all!

Overall, the Internet 🌐 comes with a plethora of legal problems; and while creators may be able to handle some problems on their own, others can be incredibly serious.

In fact, a number of legal issues social media creators face could ultimately be DEADLY ☠️ for their business – or at least put them hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

Therefore, as a content creator, you owe it to yourself and your followers to utilize every source of legal protection 🛡️ possible.

Ultimately, the best way to ensure total legal protection is by working with a social media attorney. However, finding the right lawyer for your needs is often easier said than done 🤷.

As a result, I’ve compiled a list of strategies all influencers should use when trying to find a reliable, reputable, and fair social media lawyer! Check them out below:

❇️ First, determine exactly what kind of help you require.

Generally, I advise my clients not 🙅‍♂️ to get too caught up in comparing law firms’ “industries”, such as a “media” law firm or an “entertainment” law firm. These two firms, for instance, could realistically focus on the same issues!

Instead, when researching law firms, delve deeper into the specifics to determine the firms’ specialization in as much detail as possible.

For example, Your Social Media Lawyer is much more niche than an “entertainment” lawyer. Furthermore, a little more research into the firm would show that I have a lot of experience working with YouTubers 📺!

Therefore, it’s important to determine exactly what you need the most help with – whether it’s brand deals or FTC website regulations – and find a lawyer who focuses on that topic or related ones.

❇️ Ask around!

Believe it or not, word of mouth is almost always the most effective and reliable tool ⚒️ for finding the best valued products and services.

Whether you’re a YouTuber or influencer on Instagram, don’t be afraid to ask others in your industry who they use for legal representation, and whether they would recommend them!

This is an easy way to get honest reviews from people you trust. Plus, it’s helpful to request recommendations so you know the individual isn’t ❌ being paid to give you a certain name or firm.

❇️ Consider someone local.

Did you know that social media laws can vary based on location 📍?

Not only are many Internet laws specific to certain countries, but some are also designed with certain states in mind! For example, the California Consumer Privacy Act (COPPA) protects Californian consumers.

That being said, while all lawyers should be aware of how state-specific – and country-wide – laws affect creators of all locations, it could be helpful to work with someone who is well-versed ✔️ in your state’s legislation.

Plus, if you prefer working with business partners in person, hiring a local social media attorney may make things a bit easier.

❇️ Read testimonials – then see for yourself!

Be sure to check out testimonials  💬 from past clients, Google, or Yelp reviews before hiring ANY kind of lawyer.

Plus, review the attorney’s website for legitimacy. Oftentimes, it’s easy to distinguish a reliable business from a non-professional from the websites alone!

Finally, remember that you have the right to request a consultation 🤝 with a social media attorney before you commit to working with them. In fact, many lawyers will offer free or low-cost consultations to discuss how they can help you so you can determine if they’re the right person for your legal issues.

Ultimately, you should only work with a social media attorney once you feel totally comfortable with them and the services they’re providing.

At the end of the day, your career is at stake, and you should trust it in your lawyer’s hands 👐.
